Written by Rida Siddique

Biotechnology is the fusion of two dimensions of study that is biology and technology. In this field scientist utilized living cells and their components to produce products or services for beneficial purposes of human kind. Biotechnology is an interdisciplinary field. It is based on different domains of sciences including biosciences and applied sciences. The applications of biotechnology cover environmental, pharmaceutical, agricultural, industrial and medical sectors. Scope for biotechnology as a career option is immense as we live in exciting times where there are amazing discoveries, new applications and innovative products on the market every day. There are various organizations that serve as great sources for those who are just entering the field of biotechnology. Biotechnology is rapidly expanding field in Pakistan, many universities offer B.S/M.SC/M.Phil/Ph.D in biotechnology which are as follows:

  • COMSATS Institute of Information Technology, Abbottabad
  • National University of Science and Technology, NUST Islamabad
  • International Islamic University, Islamabad
  • University of Sindh, Jamshoro
  • Bacha Khan University, Charsadda
  • University of Karachi, UOK

Biotechnologists are those who perform experiments in private and government laboratories, to transform or manipulate living organisms to generate new products. They can be employed across several industries as biochemists, biophysicists or medical scientists. Many scientists who work in biotechnology area have a diversity of skills that bring together two or more science disciplines. It is also practiced as a working relationship between two or more scientists who collaborate on projects by sharing their expertise and experiences. Certain types of biotechnology involve many specialized techniques which only a few people are capable of performing.

Biotechnologists work within several different industries including agriculture, food manufacturing, health-care and pharmaceuticals. Professionals in this field can specialize in one or more subfields like genomics, proteomics, and bioinformatics. The domain on which a trained biotechnologist can work is vast. As there are several disciplines involved in biotechnology, there is a great demand for experts in various industries.

Plant biotechnology has great scope in Pakistan as agricultural country and one can joined different research program with plant breeders. Degree holders in biotechnology can work as lecturer of biotechnology in any university or college and can get a handsome amount of salary per month. Many biotechnologists work as Research officer in different institutes like National Institute of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering Faisalabad, National Agricultural Research Center Islamabad, International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences Karachi and so on. Biotechnology has vast scope, ongoing research and their useful products make it more valuable in market covering from agricultural to pharmaceutical.
